Descriptive Letter of Intent

Dear valued nurse practitioner,

My name is Hope Francisco and I am a Doctor of Nursing Practice, Family Nurse Practitioner student at the University of Arizona College of Nursing. I am currently conducting my doctor of nursing practice project. My focus for this project is skin cancer and skin cancer prevention in Arizona. Previous research has shown that there is a gap in nurse practitioner practice of skin cancer primary prevention. For my project, I am pilot testing an 8-minute educational online intervention for nurse practitioners in Arizona regarding skin cancer and skin cancer prevention. If you are a nurse practitioner and practice in an outpatient setting in Arizona, please continue reading!

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the nation and is of concern in Arizona. Skin cancer can be prevented using several known strategies. There are also published guidelines regarding skin cancer primary prevention counseling in the outpatient setting. However, previous research has shown that Arizona nurse practitioners have a less-than-optimal knowledge of guidelines and inconsistently practice guideline recommendations.

My project allows me to address this problem. I am collaborating with my advisor, Dr. Lois Loescher. This project will consist of a pre-survey, a brief educational PowerPoint intervention, and post-survey, all delivered online. Completion of these three activities should take about 30 minutes total. The pre- and post-surveys will take no more than 10 minutes each and the intervention will be no longer than 8 minutes. The link to the pre-survey is included in this email. You will immediately be able to access the intervention upon completion of the pretest. You may complete the intervention and posttest at any time over the next two weeks. This project will aid in determining whether the intervention improves nurse practitioners' knowledge of skin cancer and skin cancer prevention, and whether it is feasible for busy nurse practitioners to use. Please consider participating in this project. Your responses will remain confidential.

The University of Arizona Institutional Review Board for human subjects research has reviewed and approved this project.

Your participation in this project is voluntary. In appreciation for your time all participants that complete the project will be entered in a drawing for a $50 gift card. You may only enter once, participation is void where prohibited by law. There are no risks associated with this project. By completing and submitting the questionnaires you are giving consent to participate in this project. You are free to stop the surveys or the PowerPoint at any time.

Please click on the survey link below and complete by Wednesday, September 14, 2016:
