Message from Nicole Ciffone, ANP-C, Clinical Lipid Specialist:

September is National Cholesterol Education Month and I am excited to share with you about what's new in the Lipid World...

The First of it's Kind in Southern Arizona

This month I opened the Arizona Center for Advanced Lipidology. This practice will be truly unique in Tucson and the surrounding areas. The clinic is specifically dedicated to those individuals and families who are at risk for cardiovascular disease with a focus on correcting lipid abnormalities and reducing inflammation. In addition to our Tucson location at Fort Lowell and Alvernon, we will have clinics in Nogales and Yuma Arizona.

Given my personal family history of cardiovascular disease, I am a strong believer in making prevention a priority. I have left Pima Heart to dedicate myself to this endeavor and have been joined by fellow lipid expert, Dr. Stanley Goldberg, who has left Banner University Medical Center.

I hope to partner with you and your patients at increased risk because of their genetics, intolerance to medications or lifestyle. Patients can call 520-323-7277 to schedule a consultation or referrals faxed 520-881-1968.

New Therapy Now Approved:

The FDA has approved 2 new medications in a brand new class...the PCSK9 inhibitors. Because of their unique mechanism of action they are able to significantly lower LDL levels. They appear to have a good safety profile and appear to be well tolerated. Amgen will be sponsoring a dinner meeting to learn about their recently approved PCSK9 inhibitor, Repatha, on Wednesday September 30th at Acacia. For more information, contact Ryan Ayers at ryayers@amgen.com.
